Newsletter January 31-February 3

We had a great 100th day of school today.  I loved all of the creative items and clues that my students brought.  We had chocolate chips, raisins, pieces of paper, candy of all types, sunflower seeds, and even soda pop tops.  Thanks for helping with this assignment at home.

Thanks to all of those who stopped by for Curriculum Night. Our Reader's Theater was a hit!  We have performed it several times since then as word has gotten out.  Today we visited Mr. Quarnberg's fourth grade class and his students explained the water cycle to groups of my students.  His class is just finishing up with their Water Cycle Unit.  It was great to see the fourth graders teach my first graders.  We then went and performed our Reader's Theater for Mrs. Campbell's class.  I sent home their Water Drop hats today, because I think we are finished with our performance. It's kind of nice being famous!

Today look for new spelling words, Dolch words, decodable books,  a new poem, and a February book order.  That book order will be due on Wednesday, February 16.  Please continue to study the sight (Dolch) words with your child and to study the spelling words.  I have had some of you mention that the decodable books are a little bit difficult for your child, if this is the case, please read it with them and  point out the words that follow the spelling pattern.  This week we are concentrating on the long /e/ sound.  I sent home three books, because the long /e/ can be heard in words like me or be, and in the vowel combinations /ee/ or /ea/.

Last week I mentioned that for Valentine's Day we will be decorating cans for our cards.  If you could send items to help decorate these cans I would greatly appreciate it.  Ideas could be stickers, foam hearts, doilies, old Valentine's cards etc.  I will send home a list of our students so that you can start purchasing cards.  If you choose to purchase cards you must give one to each child.

Keep reading every night with your child.  It really does help!  Have a great day.
