October 10 - October 14

Thank you  for coming to your SEP conference last week.  I was so pleased to meet with 100% of my parents.  I especially loved that many students had both parents attend--it's fun to have dads come also :)  Your attendance shows that you are invested in your child's education and that will only benefit your child during their educational career.  This week is the last week of our first quarter of school.   I will send home another power school print out of final grades for the first quarter by next Wednesday.

This week we will be going to the Robinson Pumpkin patch on Wednesday.  Please send your child back with their $1.00 for the pumpkin they will bring home.  Remember to send a jacket if it's chilly outside.  We will also be making our "apple head" witches on Thursday, (instead of Wednesday).  If you haven't sent an apple with your child for this fun Halloween project please send one by Wednesday. Thank you!

We have started a little unit about Spiders.  Ask your kids what they have learned about spiders! We read the book "Spiders" by Gail Gibbons.  We will do some fact/opinion work about spiders, write spider poems and sentences along with a couple of art projects to supplement the learning.  In math we are continuing with our addition strategies, today we continued to learn about adding 10 to a number.  In reading, we are learning about how the a_e, and i_e work together to create the long /a/ and /i/ sounds.

A couple more calendar items:  On Tuesday, October 18 will be our first quarter student awards presentation.  These awards are for "Perfect attendance", "excellent attendance" and "Catch the Vision" winner.  Usually these awards have been at 3:00 in the cafeteria--I am not sure if that time has changed for first grade this year and I couldn't find anything on the calendar about a specific time.  I will e-mail you specifically if your child will be receiving one of those awards.  I know I have several with awesome attendance this year!!!  Then on October 21, we will be have our PTA sponsored Walk-a-Thon.  More information will come home about this fundraising opportunity soon.

I hope that you are enjoying this beautiful fall weather.  Having a first grader at home to enjoy it with would make it that much better.

Happy Reading!
